Building on solid punk rock foundations — Swell Maps, TV Personalities, or even Cosmic Psychos are never far away — the band nevertheless maintains considerable freedom from any specific genre or musical trend, patiently crafting compositions that sometimes take on hardcore, noise, or pop elements. If they have indeed coined the term “trout core,” it is likely due to the humorous association between trout and the hardcore punk scene. Humor is a foreign language they practice daily. Their music remains fundamentally unclassifiable, a sonic whirlwind punctuated by quasi-theatrical outbursts steeped in an indestructible, blatant, and jubilant amateurism. This new album is no exception to the unchanging rule of its predecessors: chaotic, streaked with flashes of brilliance like breaths of fresh air in a terribly stifling world. From a nod to the cold brutality of the Nordic band Brainbombs to another to the Australians of Total Control, via a wild, rambling tune born of a few fevered minds from the Cévennes, everything miraculously holds together thanks to this band’s unique expertise.
